Circa 1960s. Exterior image of building. Date June 15, 1962. Minoru Yamasaki and Associates, 1958. One of Yamasaki’s masterpieces and believed by many to be among Detroit’s finest buildings. The 2 story nearly symmetrical pavilion is sheathed in warm travertine marble. The interior contains 2 levels of conference rooms that are arranged to either side of a sky lighted entry hall and lounge which has the feeling of a gothic cathedral. Circa 1970s. Construction on the Meyer and Anna Prentis Bldg and Helen L. DeRoy Lecture Hall began in June 1962 and the $2,323,000 building was completed in November 1963. Designed by Minoru Yamasaki and Associates, the Prentis Bldg fronts on Cass Avenue and is a 3 stories structure with a unique first floor arcade and garden courtyard access to Helen L. Circa 1960s. Two years after designing the McGregor Memorial Conference Center, Minoru Yamasaki and Associates designed the symmetrical education temple in the unique Modern Formalism. Circa 1960s. Minoru Yamasaki and Associates. 1964. Image is of the architectual model of the Prentis and DeRoy. Partnered with the DeRoy Auditorium, Yamasaki’s form-making derived much of its strength from the careful compositional massing of pure forms and pattern repetition of surface elements. Here, the composition of streetwall-gateway building and freestanding pavilion is perhaps a modern take on a medieval castle keep. The two buildings are linked by an underground passage.
