Circa 1930s. Image of the Detroit Institute of Art, probably about 1939. Paul P. Cret Architect 1927. The DIA ranks as one of Detroit’s cultural jewels. Its art collection is world class, and the white-marble magnificence of the Renaissance-inspired building has stood as Detroit cultural touchstone for decades.

The stately Romanesque Revival composition is softened by the buff-colored brick. Under the leadership of David Mackenzie, a junior college was begun in the building in 1917. In 1926, high school classes left the building and the growing college took over all the space in the stately structure.
