  • 4-H Uniform, 1948-1949

    This dress was sewn at home by Ruth Ann Herriott (nee Goodell) when she was a member of the Willing Workers 4-H Club in Eden Township, Benton County, Iowa, near Garrison. She joined the club, referred to as the Eden Willing Workers, in 1942 at age 10; she probably made this in the later 1940s.

  • Appliqued Blue Silk Organza Evening Dress, 1949

    Navy blue silk organza evening dress. Scooped neckline trimmed with ivory lace leaf and rose appliques repeated in falling pattern along left front side and in embroidered vine encircling lower skirt. Very full circular skirt has two layers of organza over of layer of net. Skirt seams have been let out at waist. Dress would be worn over chemise. Clothing label: Salon Moderne/SAKS FIFTH AVENUE.     Cream summer evening dress of raw silk with decorative red cord floral applique on collar, cuffs, skirt and belt. Front closure with self-fabric buttons with red embroidery. Clothing label: Salon Moderne/SAKS FIFTH AVENUE. Handwritten on back of label: Mrs. Firestone/1-27-49/473.

  • Silk Taffeta Floor Length Dress, 1949

    Raspberry silk taffeta dress. Floor length with short raglan sleeves and carved, covered buttons. Large, one-piece oval overskirt creates aprons in front and back and open V-shapes on sides with slightly A-line underskirt visible on both sides.     Elizabeth Parke Firestone wore this dress at a holiday party for the Princeton Club of Akron, Ohio on December 20, 1949. Born in Decatur, Illinois in 1897 Elizabeth Parke married Harvey S. Firestone Jr., son of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company founder Harvey S.
