  • 4-H Uniform, 1948-1949

    This dress was sewn at home by Ruth Ann Herriott (nee Goodell) when she was a member of the Willing Workers 4-H Club in Eden Township, Benton County, Iowa, near Garrison. She joined the club, referred to as the Eden Willing Workers, in 1942 at age 10; she probably made this in the later 1940s.

    Navy blue silk organza evening dress. Scooped neckline trimmed with ivory lace leaf and rose appliques repeated in falling pattern along left front side and in embroidered vine encircling lower skirt. Very full circular skirt has two layers of organza over of layer of net. Skirt seams have been let out at waist. Dress would be worn over chemise. Clothing label: Salon Moderne/SAKS FIFTH AVENUE.   • Silk Taffeta Floor Length Dress, 1949

    Raspberry silk taffeta dress. Floor length with short raglan sleeves and carved, covered buttons. Large, one-piece oval overskirt creates aprons in front and back and open V-shapes on sides with slightly A-line underskirt visible on both sides. Clothing label: Salon Moderne/SAKS FIFTH AVENUE/NEW YORK. Handwritten on label: Mrs. H. Firestone/12-21-49/374. This dress was copied from Dior's 1948 Spring Collection; see Vogue Magazine, March 1, 1948, p.72, and March 15, 1948, p.104.

    Elizabeth Parke Firestone wore this dress at a holiday party for the Princeton Club of Akron, Ohio on December 20, 1949. Born in Decatur, Illinois in 1897 Elizabeth Parke married Harvey S. Firestone Jr., son of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company founder Harvey S. Firestone, in 1921.Once described by a friend as, "the most luxurious woman in the history of luxury," Elizabeth Parke Firestone's clothing collection illustrates her impeccable taste in fashion.

    This woman's afternoon dress of brown silk crepe has a fitted bodice with a deep waistline. There is a mock bow across the sheer brown yoke, and another bow around the drop waist with long ties hanging down the front. There is a back zipper, and the long sleeves have zippers at the cuffs.   • Blue wool knit dress from the late 1940s to early 1950s

    Woman's blue wool knit dress; shift style with hidden elastic waist, boat neckline, and cap sleeves. The dress has white, ribbon top knit stripes 1/4" wide in groups of four, running horizontally down the length of the dress. The 1" hem is secured with a stockinet stitch. One of the first knit dreses imported from Italy.

    This is a woman's two piece wool twill suit in dark taupe wool with black silk braid. The jacket has long, straight sleeves, rounded collar, is hip length with a nipped-in waist. It is decorated with a swirling loop and paisley pattern of braid at the center front and jacket hemline. Covered buttons are at its center, and a hook and eye closure continue into the braid pattern at the front points of the jacket.   • Silk crepe cocktail dress with jacket from the 1940s

    Woman's silk crepe cocktail dress with jacket in two shades of gold. The dress flows freely from the gathering of the round, piped neckline. Ties on the upper back criss-cross the front in the Grecian style. The panels of the dress alternate shades of gold. The jacket is bolero-cut with cap sleeves and piped edges.

  • Women's gray wool shirtwaist with round, notched collar from the 1940s

    This women's gray wool shirtwaist has a round, notched collar. Its center closing has four gray buttons, and cuffed, bracelet length dolman sleeves with a gusset under the arm. The skirt is cut on the bias, and is mid-calf in length. It has a peg-top, and a center zipper closing, with two darts front and back. A stiff self belt with buckle covered in mottled gray kid is lined with brown leather. The dress was worn by donor, a buyer for Hudson's, and was made by Irene of California.

    Short, baseball jacket of navy colored wool trimmed in yellow. The initials SC are on the right front. This item was owned by Richard Wilson, the adopted son of Matilda and Alfred Wilson. Matilda was the wife of John Francis Dodge (October 25, 1864 – January 14, 1920), co-founder of the Dodge Motor Car Company in Detroit, Michigan.
