    While this appears to be a day dress at first glance, it was more likely used around the house in the morning as it opens entirely from waist to hem at center front.     Between 1740 and 1800 dresses had open front skirts or they were looped up the sides to reveal the petticoat.Quilted petticoats were usually decorated along the hemline.Not only were these used for decoration, but for warmth as well.Later into the nineteenth century a quilted petticoat was primarily used for warmth.

    Twill lining appears to be unevenly hand-woven.Interior seams joining the sateen andties at waist appear to be machine sewn hence the late date of the petticoat. There are more pleats near the slit at center back rendering a slight bustled affect.Lancaster, Pennsylvania area location is per dealer.This particular petticoat would have been used during the winter months for warmth.
