Referee Sam Hennessey stands in ring with heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis (the Brown Bomber) as opponent, Abe Simon hits the mat near the ropes at Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan. Louis went on to win the fight after knocking Simon down four times. "Born in Alabama, Louis moved to Detroit as a child and began boxing at the Brewster Recreation Center, in his first amateur bout, Louis was knocked down seven times, but he improved rapidly.
