Mr. James Winston's unpublished catalogue of Garrick Club theatre portraits, 1835-1843
The catalog documents British theater portraits that hung in the Garrick Club and was created by the Club's first secretary, Mr. James Winston. He began to compile the scrapbook when actor-comedian Charles Mathews's large portrait collection was acquired by the Garrick Club in 1835. That collection had been chronicled in 1833 by Mathews's son, Charles James Mathews, in Catalogue Raisonne of Charles Mathews's Gallery of Theatrical Portraits, which was then used as the source text for Winston's new catalog. His edits, deletions, and additions appear in handwritten text. His last entry is for April 1843, just weeks before he died. Nothing was added later, though he was replaced as Club Secretary by his son.
