Camp at Bridgeport Alabama December 22 1863 Dear Cousin
I once moar [more] take my pen in hand to let you know that I am well and hope theas [these] few lines will find you all the same I [received?] your kind and welcom[e] letter the other day and I was glad to hear from you and to hear that you was well well [think?] [since?] I wrote to you last I have had hard times we have march 1,000 [since?] I co[u]nt to the rigt and was in the Battle of Chat[ta]nooga thre[e] days and then we faled him foar [four] days and night and then we went to Knosevill and then we come back to Chat[ta]nooga and there was 14 days that we had to live on the country one pinte [pint] of coarn [corn] meal foar [for] thre[e] days if that hant [ain’t?] a hard way of living then I doant [don’t] [k]now well [t]hank I will [heft?] to bring my letter to a cloas [close] for this time foar [for] I have got some to write to day this is the first letter that I have wroat [wrote] in two month well we ar[e] going in wintoar [winter] guardes [guards] a [town?] 40 miles from this places [place] please write as so[o]n as you git [get] this now [war?] but still remain your cousin Alexander Van RiperTo Henry A Van Riper
