I received your letter and was glad to hear from you I am well and hope these few lines will if you the same I did not think that Alexander would enlist but I wish that I was old enough I would go to I would go as it is if they would take me about all the boys in our neighborhood is enlisting that is old enough to go gary lives about two miles from here he goes to school almost every day he is almost as tall as I be I went after chestnuts yesterday but they are not quite ripe yet we haint had any frost yet the threes hang loaded I dont know whether that letter was from you or Willis you dident [didn’t] sign you name to it Tell your father and mother to write to me send my love to all my friends if I have any [illegible] by I still remain your affectionate cosen [cousin]John Van Riper To Henry van Riper
