Aug the 11 1861 Dear Cousins
I [k]now take my pen in hand to let you know that I am well and hope this will find you all the same wee [we] left Adrian last Sateday [Saturday]. And moday [Monday] we was in camp and wenday [Wednesday] wee was swornin [sworn in] we have good times so far we have baker bread and fresh beaf [beef], and rise [rice?] and buns, and coffee twice A day and all the [patchis?] wee want to eat I will send my likeness as soon as we git [get] our [uniform?] I am going to send you A paper [we have a good captain his name is ward?] write soon no [more this time?] but still remain your cousinsA W Van Riper To H A Van Riper Direct to Camp Dennison Ohio In Care of Captain Ward
