East Paw Paw Jan 26th 1860 Cousin Henry
I rec’d [received] your letter a few days ago & have not answered it before because I have been quite busy & have not been very well I don’t feel first rate today but I don’t think it will amount to any thing much our folks are all well it is quite cold today there is some snow on the ground but the sleighing is not very good We have had some quite severe weather but it didn’t last but a few days I am at school today Our school is very large we have fifty-five & sixty scholars nearly all the time in taking up all the lessons we devote three half days or one day & a half & then the longest lessons are only 40 minutes We have a very good teacher I suppose you are having fine times going to school & I hope you are learning all you can I see by your letter you are improving very fast in Penmanship which I am well pleased to notice there was a concert here last Saturday eve given by the Philharmonic Society from Earl I h ad forgotten to tell you that this letter is dated wrong, for today is the 30th instead of the 26th I rec’d [received] a letter & Daguerre type from Jim Peters some time ago I have not heard from Uncle Henrys folks since Christmas they were well then I can’t write any more now for I have some lessons to get for this afternoon You must write & tell your Father & Mother we should like to hear from them My love to Willis, Mary, Eva & Nelly & some for yourself Write as often as you can I will answer them Good byeBill Van Riper
