Ophir Sept the 29 55 Dear Brother and Sister
I received your letter and was glad to hear you were all well and through the blessing of divine providence we are enjoying good health and a trying to do the best we can to mak[e] us comefortable [comfortable] Henry has got back and is fixing my house we put up the wood house frame this fore noon and the addition to the house is about ready he is in a hur[r]y to get it done for he is a going to work for a man out almost to the Mississippi river put[t]ing up a distillery he thinks he will be gone four mont[h]s he left his folks well you wanted to know when I would be down I had calculated to start next Monday but his coming out I shall have to put it off a week or ten days I am busy drawing lumber to finish our house I will be there by the middle of Oct if sickness don’t prevent I think I will bring my letter to a close or I shant have any thing to tell when I come farewellJames Van Riper To N.
