Civic, religious and community leaders are preparing a massive nonviolent response to a planned May 9 visit by the Ku Klux Klan to Ann Arbor.

“The idea is to have a love-in next to the Klan,” said Ray Mullins, president of the Ypsilanti-Willow Run chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

A small Butler, Ind., sect of the Klan has applied for a permit to rally in Ann Arbor next month. In June 1996, an appearance by a dozen members of the same Klan group prompted rock-throwing by a few members of a crowd of protesters. Police tear-gassed the protesters and seven of them were arrested.

The incident not only gave Ann Arbor a black eye, it gave the Klan the attention it wanted, in the opinion of some local activists.

“You’ve got 10 or 12 ragtag people in dirty sheets, and they plan on provoking people to respond with anger to them as a means of getting free publicity,” said Mullins.

A coalition of some 80 religious, peace, justice and community groups is determined that things will be different this time around. For 18 months, the groups have been conducting peacekeeping workshops, discussions and rallies to counter the Klan’s message of hate with a demonstration of racial unity arid peace.

Last weekend, on the 30th anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, the coalition held a unity march and rally. About 250 people participated in a candlelight procession through downtown Ann Arbor.

At a program afterward, speaker Mattie Jones of Louisville, Ky., discussed her experience in leading a unity rally in response to a Klan rally there in 1996. Ann Arbor orga-

Detroit Clean Sweep

Thousands of volunteers will hit — and scrub and sweep — Detroit’s streets and vacant lots from 8-3 Saturday as part of the fifth annual Detroit Clean Sweep. The citywide bagged litter and debris clean-up effort brings residents and nonresidents together to make Detroit a clean and safer environment for everyone.

Since 1994, more than 80,000 volunteers have participated in the program. Last year alone, some 26,000 volunteers filled more than 323,000 trash bags with litter and debris.

“Volunteers working together can change things,” said Mayor Dennis Archer. “Not only can you

help improve the appearance of Detroit, but you also can take pride in the fact that you’re helping to make positive things happen.”

For information on how to get involved, call 313-224-2415 or visit the Clean Sweep volunteer office in Room 103 of the City-County Building, Woodward and Jefferson. Information is also available at Neighborhood City Hall offices.

Sporty new Lincoln targets global market

Martha Hindes

Journal Automotive Writer

Calling it a “driver’s car,” Ford Motor Co. officials launched a new international luxury sport sedan with hopes it will capture buyers around the globe.

The Lincoln LS6 and LS8, with V-6 and V-8 engines respectively, are meant to capture the hearts of drivers in 33 countries, including Japan and the Europe nations as well as the United States. Ford unveiled the new, smaller, rear-drive auto at preview days for the New York Auto Show, which began over the weekend.

“The Lincoln LS series is designed to travel beyond the borders — beyond the design borders, beyond the geographical borders and beyond the psychological borders — that Lincoln has traditionally operated within,” said Jac Nasser, president of Ford’s North American Operations.

The LS will be manufactured in right- and left-hand-drive versions when production begins next year, said Ford spokesman Ken Zino. The first autos will be sold as 1999 models in the United States while the export version will be a 2000 model.

Ford hasn’t announced a price, but . the LS series is expected to start in the low $30,000 range to compete

with Mercedes-Benz’s C series and other entry-level luxury imports. The vehicle will bear the Lincoln LS name, but the company has not announced how it will be marketed to international buyers.

Side air bags

Smarting perhaps from continuing criticism about the damage large sport utilities can cause, Ford also announced it will have a new-genera-tion side-impact air-bag system for all its 1999 car lines.

Ford used the New York show to kick off a dual-pouch system that would protect the body, neck and head from an impact coming from the side. The side air bags will be standard on luxury models and optional on other auto lines, said Nasser.

Flint gets GM plant

It was brow-wiping time for some Buick City UAW workers last Tuesday when Flint Mayor Woodrow Stanley announced some good union news. After months of speculation that GM’s new engine plant would be built far outside city limits, Stanley said the plant, costing approximately $500 million, would stay in town.

A GM statement confirmed the company is seeking the establishment of a rehabilitation district and tax abatement on a proposed taxable investment of $315 million.

The proposed site is next to the GM Powertrain V8 plant on Van Slyke Road. According to a GM press release, the “selection of this site is pending the approval of economic incentives from the city of Flint and the state of Michigan.”

Although GM was searching for a site in Genesee County, the location of the plant had been in doubt since the company confirmed last year it would close the V-8 plant at Buick City.

“They plan to break ground this summer and have the (new) plant up and running by 2000 for the 2001 model year,” said GM spokesman Gerry Holmes. The current V-8 plant is scheduled to close in the fall of 1999.

Holmes said about 700 of the 2,500 current GM Powertrain hourly workers will move to the new plant. “We expect most of the employees will flow into other operations in Flint,” said Holmes. “Some will have transfer rights to Romulus,” where there is an

Take a tip from Tammy and live it up now

As usual, I fell asleep the other night in front of the television. One of the last rthings I remember was watching one of Tammy Wynette’s daughters talk about the country singing legend on one of those Family Channel biographies.

The daughter, whose name I don’t recall, said with a trace of wonder in her voice that even though her mother was in her 50s, she showed the world and her children that you’re never too old to learn new things, to start all over again.

That line made me smile.

Fifty-something seemed rather long in the tooth to Wynette’s beautiful child. I wondered how she would react if she knew that hidden inside each one of us 50-something folks is a kid, often younger than our children, who is still filled with awe and uncertainty.

When I woke up the next morning, one of the first things I saw on televi-

New York supporters carry the banner as April 2 march starts from the IBM Building, where the Freedom Forum, formerly the Gannett Foundation, is housed.

Organizing victory

Workers at Harvard Drug Warehouse in Livonia voted March 26 to be represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 876.

Local 876 organizer Tom Rekuc gave credit to an in-plant organizing committee. “This group of workers showed great courage, tenacity and heart all through the campaign,” he said.

UFCW Local 876 is continuing its drive to organize Rite Aid stores. It asks people who know a Rite Aid employee to call 800-321-6406.

Directly to directors

Touring newspaper workers last weekend visited the homes and offices of two Knight Ridder directors, John L. Weinberg, senior chairman of Goldman Sachs, the investment bank; and Thomas Gerrity, dean of the Wharton School, the University of Pennsylvania’s business school.

One Gannett director, Meredith Brokaw, wife of TV anchorman Tam Brokaw, also got a call.

All three directors were away or stayed hidden.

But they knew locked-out workers had come to see them.

Jersey’s vanishing dailies

The locked-out workers also attended a conference at Rutgers University in Trenton, N.J., April 4, which focused on the increasing chain ownership and consolidation of the state’s daily newspapers.

It was titled “Where Have All the Papers Gone?”

In 1970 New Jersey had 33 daily newspapers. Today there are 19, with nine owners. Gannett Co. Inc., owner of the Detroit News and USA Ibday, has been buying up Jersey papers.

Among the speakers were Maryann Mahaffey, who talked about Gannett ownership in Detroit, and Richard McCord, author of “The Chain Gang: One Man Versus the Gannett Empire.”

The Manhattan rally

The locked-out workers had participated in a rally in Manhattan April 2. ‘We had a good representation from newspaper and non-newspaper unions,” said Key Martin, an organizer of the event. It started with a rally in front of the offices of the Freedom Forum, formerly the Gannett Foundation, followed by a march to the offices of USA Today.

Former Detroit News Publisher Robert Giles, now a Freedom Forum bigwig, was out of town that day. But his subordinates attended the rally and attentively noted what was said. His name was mentioned.

Martin noted: “The zip code that these offices are in has the largest concentration of corporate political contributions of any zip code in America. That’s why the Gannett offices are there — because there are so many corporate offices and lawyers’ offices in the area. That’s where the financial revenue stream of Gannett comes from.”

ACOSS takes story of lockout far and wide

Four locked-out newspaper workers traveled through Canada and the Pacific Northwest last month, spreading information about the 33-month-long strike-lockout in Detroit to thousands on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border.

The tour was organized by the Action Coalition of Strikers and Supporters and by Canadian autoworker Bruce Allen, who is a member of the CAW Local 199 in St. Catharines, Ontario.

“I wanted to send out the message that the struggle in Detroit is the fight of workers everywhere,” said Allen. The mobilization, called Spring Offensive Tours, “put a face to the stories Canadian workers have been following since July 13, 1995,” he said.

The strategy worked.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, at its provincial convention in Grande Prairie, Alberta, passed a resolution March 26 to support the boycott of USA Tbday, owned by Gannett.

CUPE is Canada’s largest public-sec-tor union with 28,000 members in Alberta and 460,000 members nationally. The resolution will be submitted to CUPE’s upcoming national convention.

Dennis Nazelli of Teamsters Local 372 addressed the CUPE convention while on the 12-day western Canada swing of the Spring Offensive Tbur.

Kate DeSmet of Newspaper Guild Local 22 and John Martin of Detroit Typographical Union Local 18 kicked off Spring Offensive on March 3 with four days of speeches and rallies in Windsor, St. Catharines and Toronto.

Their largest rally was in Ibronto, where printers at the Ibronto Star gathered in the rain to support the locked-out workers.

“The rain kept coming down, but the printers and their supporters never complained,” Martin said.

DeSmet said Canada has “the feeling of home to me, and not just because it is so close geographically to my hometown, but because there is a great union spirit among many workers.”

Barbara Ingalls of DTU Local 18 spent 10 days in Washington, Oregon and northern California. “Everywhere I went,” she said, “I was met by people

Ann Arbor group has plan for Klan: Love-in

come in large numbers to be part of a nonviolent response in the face of hate.”

In 1996, the City of Ann Arbor erected barricades to separate the Klan rally on the City Hall steps from the counter-demonstration. Some anti-Klan protesters threw rocks, and police in riot gear tear-gassed the crowd.

Several fights and arrests occurred.

This time around, “we’d like everybody to be nonviolent, including the police,” Hanna-Davies said.

The city has not announced plans

yet for a rally site for the Klan visit in May. Kolb said the unity rally will probably be held a block away.

In Louisville in 1996, Jones said, a large crowd was singing and listening to speakers. “When the Klan appeared, we didn’t know they appeared,” she said. “We didn’t hear them, but they heard us.”

Unity rally organizers say they welcome the participation of all groups as long as they pledge to be peaceful. “We won’t tolerate disruption,” said Mullins. “We’ll have no sympathy for people who are out of line.”

Organizers say their goal is not to “shut down” the Klan, as some anti-Klan groups have advocated, but to overwhelm them with positive energy.

“While their free speech rights have to be honored, we will denounce their hatred in even louder voices,” Hanna-Davies said.

Workshops for rally peacekeepers will be held in Ann Arbor April 18 and 19 and May 2 at locations to be determined. Those interested in the training should call the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice at 734-663-1870.

-nizers have been working with Jones since then.

Jones told the crowd that it is important for people to come out in a peaceful public demonstration against the Klan rather than stay home and try to ignore the situation. Staying home leaves the field clear for violent anti-Klan groups to organize and influence counterdemonstrations, she said.

At least four Ann Arbor City Council members were among the marchers last weekend. Democrat Christopher Kolb said it was a mistake in 1996 not to mount a large response to the Klan.

“It was a failure on the part of community leadership not to recognize that we needed to provide an arena for the city to show we are against racism and the Klan and to do it in a nonviolent way,” Kolb said. “I’m accepting the blame.”

On Monday the Ann Arbor City Council voted unanimously to urge community members to attend the peaceful rally.

Tobi Hanna-Davies, council member and leader of the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice, which is heading the anti-Klan coalition, said 150 community peacekeepers have been trained to prepare for May 9. More training sessions are planned.

“The main thing for us to prove to everybody is that it will be safe to come out,” she said. “It will be totally different than two years ago. We want families to bring their children and

Chrysler profit

Buoyed by healthy truck sales and cost-cutting, Chrysler Corp. posted a whopping, best-ever $1,052 billion profit during the first quarter of 1998. Total revenue was $16.8 billion.

“We’ve continued our string of successful product launches,” said Chrysler Chairman Robert J. Eaton in announcing the results. “The Dodge Durango (a full-size sport utility vehicle), now at full production, has customers lining up for them.” The 1998 Chrysler Concord and Dodge Intrepid also hit the product mark, he added.

Chrysler is first of the U.S. Big Three auto makers to announce first-quarter earnings.

The recorded history of maple sugaring goes back to the days of the Pilgrims, when native Americans taught the newcomers how to tap into maple trees at the right time in late winter and early spring to get the sap that is made into syrup and sugar.

Last month, Greenfield Village in Dearborn conducted a program to let grade school students learn the process in a hands-on fashion.

About 220 graduate teaching assistants at Wayne State University are voting in a mail ballot on whether to be represented by a union, the Graduate Employees Organizing Committee, an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers. Ballots went out Tuesday. The Michigan Employment Relations Commission is supervising the vote.

Jon Curtiss, a Michigan Federation of Teachers organizer, said the university will not let approximately half the teaching assistants vote, claiming they don’t really teach. It also has barred research assistants from voting, he said.

According to Curtiss, a “community election” will be held April 22-23,

in which the teaching assistants who were denied a vote may cast an unofficial ballot. Local elected officials and area clergy will monitor the voting booths. Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Gumbleton is to count the ballots.

The university administration seems to be “engaging in anti-union actions if not rhetoric,” said GEOC member Charles Smith. “They’ve refused to allow whole groups of employees to choose for themselves if they want union representation. They’ve even tried to prevent half of the teaching assistants from voting after they had signed an agreement that allows all teaching assistants to vote. They’ve tried to delay the election. It all adds up.”

Starr-crossed puppet needs to take a hike

The    '

commentary

Banks are in hog heaven

Kenneth Starr, the so-called independent prosecutor with more strings attached to his independence than a puppet in bondage, needs to wrap up this $40 million investigation. He’s wasted more taxpayer dollars for fewer results than any one individual has a right to, and now’s the time for him to pack his bags and fade from view.

Take a hike, Mr. Starr. Please.

It has been four years since Starr began his quest to unearth something on President Bill Clinton involving Whitewater, and he failed. His inability to piece together a credible case on that matter alone should have signaled for a red light, but somehow the boundaries of Starr’s investigation were stretched so that he could continue his efforts via the Paula Jones sexual harassment case and, more recently, the Monica Lewinsky affair. The man has become an octopus, and his tentacles are dabbling in some of everything.

A little over a week ago, while President Clinton was in Africa, a federal judge in Arkansas who was appointed by ex-President George Bush decided to throw out the Paula Jones case because it was so weak. The surprise wasn’t the weakness of the case, which should have been apparent to anyone paying the slightest attention, but that a federal judge appointed by a Republican president resisted a mountain of pressure to play politics and instead opted to do the right thing. Imagine that.

Predictably those determined to wreck the presidency by any means necessary are already saying that too much is being made of the judge’s decision, but that’s a load of, well, foul-smelling matter. The entire case of Paula Jones was funded by a well-monied alliance of conservative organizations, such as the Rutherford Institute, that has been seeking to damage the president for some time. Mr. Starr, who has compared himself to the Fictional TV character Jack Webb (“Just the facts, m’am, just the facts”), is guilty of telling more than a little bit of fiction himself if he expects anyone to believe he has been operat

ing totally within the imaginary bubble of an influence-free zone.

According to a recent article written by Eric Schlosser in Rolling Stone magazine, Starr has continued to represent clients for the lawfirm of Kirkland & Ellis while also keeping up his duties as “independent” prosecutor, and he has worked privately with a number of groups that despise the Clinton administration, such as the tobacco industry, the Landmark Legal Foundation and the Institute for Justice. Both the Landmark Legal Foundation and the institute are funded by Richard Scaife, a 65-year-old arch-conservative billionaire who routinely gives away money to numerous far-right organizations, and who has an apparent and particular fondness for those which scoop dirt on the president.

Interestingly enough, last year when Starr made a run for the door to exit his duties as independent prosecutor after the failure of his well-hyped Whitewater investigation, his conservative masters reeled him back to tread still more hot water. If he stays in much longer, the man is likely to become boiled. The only thing that can save Starr at this point is if his report turns up anything that will result in the impeachment of Clinton, and at this point that seems a long stretch.

Meanwhile, Clinton’s approval ratings in the polls continue at a record high while both a Newsweek poll and a Washington Post poll show that voters are tired of listening to the sound of zippers during the evening news hour.

Take a hike, Mr. Starr. Please.

10-second editorial

By Jim Hightower

Hogs not only like to eat from the trough, but some want to hog the whole trough. That’s the case of these squealers — they’re America’s giant bankers, and they’re out to crush their small competitors so the giants can control all of our banking outlets.

Lately, such giants as First National, NationsBank, BankAmerica, Citibank and BankOne have been after credit unions, which are small, local, consumer-owned banks. These small fry have irritated the big hogs by attracting millions of us customers with low fees and friendly service. Indeed, a 1997 report by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group found that fees at the big banks average more than twice as much as credit union fees. Rather than compete with these thrifty financial institutions by offering lower fees and better service, the hogs are simply trying to eliminate credit unions.

One tactic of the big banks is to demand that Congress tax credit unions. “It’s unfair,” squeal the hogs, “that we get taxed, but the small credit institutions don’t.”

Hey, hog — credit unions are nonprofit. Get it? They pass all their earnings directly to their customers, so they have no profits to tax.

Foiled there, the hogs then went

squealing to the Supreme Court, which loves hogs. Sure enough, the Court recently ruled that credit-union members must be employees of a particular company or occupation, which means that some 20 million of us could get tossed out of our credit unions and leave us nowhere to go but to the hogs.

The good news is that there’s a bipartisan bill in Congress to rewrite the law so even more of us can join credit unions. H.R. 1151 has a fair chance to pass. To support it — and to support consumer choice in banking, call U.S. PIRG at 202-546-9707.

Abraham’s scheme to import workers is flawed

Once again our politicians are proving to be our own worst enemy; first we have our elected leaders’ actions in encouraging businesses to relocate to the Maquiadora Zone in Mexico, then cramming the North American Free Trade Agreement down our collective throats and now Sen. Spencer Abraham’s disastrous “import worker” idea.

Sen. Abraham’s scheme to import workers to fill vacancies in businesses that employ American workers is not to rid them of a supposed labor shortage, it is to get high-skilled work done without having to pay high-skilled wages. We should not be surprised that Benteler Automotive, a German company, is whining to the press that it can’t fill nearly 200 job openings!

I have a good idea why that is -Bentler is unwilling to pay high-skilled wages for high-skilled jobs and it has no desire to continue to train its workers. It has repeatedly ignored our own labor laws in American by not recognizing the union its work force voted in years ago. Who do you suppose will be imported for these high-skilled job openings? We simply don’t have the resources to police who is being imported and without doubt will end up with uncertified, unqualified workers - willing to work for less than anyone else. We as taxpayers will then most likely be asked to subsidize these companies to pay the necessary costs to train these imported workers. If we have the money to train workers, without a shadow of a doubt, there are thousands of young people who would love the opportunity to learn a skill that is in demand.

‘We purchased an entire Senator, and he was defeated for re-election. Can’t we sue the voters or something?

Another critical error in Sen. Abraham’s design is that assuming that we approve of his increase in imported worker quotas, $50 million would be set aside for 20,000 low-income scholarships. I don’t think it takes a genius to deduce America’s best interests would be better served to award these desirable scholarships to the top 20,000 people regardless of their parent’s or their own income.

We should all consider that an outcome analysis has already been done by our leaders, who will support this proposed legislation, and you and I, the working people of America, are not the winning consideration. Who really owns Congress becomes clear when Congress wants to place limits on labor’s contributions to campaigns but big business outspends labor 11 to 1.

When politicians legislate into areas they know nothing about, it usually spells disaster for us. Maybe we should consider importing some of our current leaders. It makes at least as much sense as Sen. Abraham’s proposal.

Powerful, personal writing

I read Beaufort Cranford’s column last Sunday, ironically during a monthly visit to my 15-year-old son in Grosse Pointe. (“Dads who love deeply don’t make news,” March 29). What a powerful and personal piece of writing.

Until last December when I moved to west Michigan, I had the company of my son every weekend, as well as the comfort of knowing that he was within 10 minutes’ drive. Now the meals shared, the movies watched together, the table tennis matches and the shopping trips have ended. In their place is a weekly card or letter and phone call.

Why is the realm of men’s emotions, particularly fatherly love and longing, as talked about as “Mongolian woodchucks” in Cranford’s words? And why is it that only in private moments, when booze has unleashed our sentiments, can men cop to the heartache of time-limited fathering?

I guess there’s just not enough time after directing corporate takeovers, after the plumbing and carpentry projects, after fighting fires, after assembling or repairing cars or during the ubiquitous televised sporting events. There just isn’t time left to speak the matters of a man’s heart.

Thanks to Mr. Cranford for taking the time . . . and summoning the courage!

The JO A was not the answer

I found the March 22 commentary “Nashville tale bodes ill for Detroit papers” interesting; I am sure the joint operating agreement was not the answer.

It seems to me the main reason the Detroit News and Free Press lost readers was the way the newspapers handled the workers after the unions made the offer to return to work.

The papers have had months to tell the public that the strike is over, but I understand it is not settled, and a lot of us won't buy another Free Press or News until the workers are back on the job.

Solidarity is the answer, as the article “UAW voting on revised Cat offer” (March 22) shows. Best wishes to you for a satisfactory end to this long and tough labor action.

Defend affirmative action

On behalf of Academics for Affirmative Action and Social Justice, a group formed at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to defend affirmative action, I would like to commend the Detroit Sunday Journal for its support of affirmative action. The labor movement and affirmative action programs have much in common. Both have been and currently are part of the struggle for justice.

This similarity is no more clearly seen than by looking at the effect each has had on higher education. Union gains have opened the doors of higher education to millions of young people from working-class families. Similarly, affirmative action has allowed countless women and people of color to attend schools that previously had not valued them and their talents.

Because of these similarities, it is no accident that the corporate attack on labor unions, as exemplified by your struggle, is occurring at the same time that affirmative action policies are being challenged. The forces behind both attacks are the same.

As a white male, I realize that many will say that I have not benefited from affirmative action programs designed to correct inequalities based on gender and race. But because my mother is a unionized public school teacher, I certainly have benefited from the gains that unionism has brought her. And it is unlikely that my mother would have been able to become a teacher had it not been for people such as my grandfather, who became a union iron worker in the 1930s and remains one to this day.

Perhaps the elimination of affirmative action programs would not hurt me directly. But I know that if opponents continue to eliminate affirmative action policies as they did in California, the attacks on unions will only intensify. That is why I urge all union members, all working people and all supporters of the courageous Detroit newspaper workers to defend affirmative action.

Starr is a political assassin

Kenneth Starr, in my opinion, is just a political assassin, hired by the Republicans to kill the president. How many of us would withstand the scrutiny of a $40-million investigation?

Kenneth Starr's use of the enormous powers of the special prosecutor's office and the grand jury is an abuse of power. These tremendous and extraordinary powers were not created to investigate sexual behavior. It may be necessary in a free society to enact laws that limit constitutional freedom to fight organized crime or to prevent treason. But to use these laws inappropriately negates the rights of individuals in a free society. It makes a mockery of the Bill of Rights.

What SFX’s clout could mean to you

What does SFX Entertainment’s big, bold move into the concert business mean for you? Well, maybe nothing - or maybe we’ll be talking about it later in the cheap seats.

“I’m not sure there’s going to be any discernible effect for the consumer,” says PollStar editor Gary Bongiovanni. “We’re still in a market-driven business. The prices people pay for tickets will be based on demand for the artists. If someone tries pricing an Elton John concert at $60 a ticket and it doesn’t sell out - well, then we’ll know they can’t charge $60 for an Elton John ticket.

“But nobody’s really sure what all this means.”

Tim Klahs, SFX’s director of investor relations, says there actually may be some consumer benefits to SFX’s octopus-like presence. “We want to maximize concert attendance,” he says. “One way of doing that is lowering ticket prices. We’re not in the business to do that to the extent that profits are damaged, but we see economies of scale providing that opportunity.”

What’s in it for SFX? “A lowering of the ticket price would not only bring additional concertgoers,” he says, “but hopefully allow them to take advantage of the other services our venues offer,” such as food, drinks and souvenirs.

Industry watchers, however, are skeptical that SFX will pass savings on to consumers. “SFX could conceivably eliminate the booking agents, which would only fatten their wallet,” one concert promoter says. “I’m sure they’re not going to pass that saving along to the consumer. As a publicly held company driven by the bottom line and the stock price, that wouldn’t fit their profile.”

As the atomic bomb changed the world, so the explosive emergence of a new concert-busi-ness conglomerate threatens to transform the $1.3 billion live-music industry.

A half-billion-dollar spending spree has made SFX Entertainment a superpower - the first nationwide concert promoter. And when the mushroom cloud of its birth clears and the giant begins flexing its muscle, the shock waves may affect everyone from booking agents to artists to competing promoters and - most important - you.

The man behind SFX Entertainment is power broker Robert Sillerman, an entertainment-biz wizard who amassed a fortune’s worth of radio stations, sold them off last year and then began systematically buying a half-dozen of the country’s best-run, most powerful independent concert-promotion companies.

When those acquisitions were completed this month, SFX was suddenly in control of a national web of 42 major concert venues and more than 100 clubs and small theaters.

Now SFX indisputably dominates the concert market. It has the clout to book a major national tour for a star as big as Alanis Morissette - who will hit the road’this summer - with a single

Take a siesta from grease at La Fiesta Mexicana

I lived in the Southwest for a few years and was shocked by the terrible food that passed for authentic Mexican cooking. Shortly after I was hired as a reporter at the San Diego Union, I

was taken by a fellow reporter to a place he proclaimed the best Mexican cooking in town.

He encouraged me to order an enchilada platter and taste his chili rellenos, which I did. Like almost everything else on the menu — I was dragged back there three or four times — they were terrible.

The enchilada alone was a heavy, stomach-wrenching, gloppy mess of soggy tortilla, falling apart from boiling in yellow-green greases and trapped on an oval platter with muddy refried beans and a pile of overbloated, starchy rice that had some years earlier had an affair with a tomato.

Everything on the menu I tried was at the same level — massacred and greasy.

I don’t believe any form of cooking has suffered from bad interpretation more than Mexican. So it is good to find a place in the Detroit area that at least gets three-quarters of the

way there and is worth recommending.

Lightness distinguishes food at Ypsilanti restaurant.

Journal photo by GEORGE WALDMAN

I heard about it from a friend who used to travel on business all over South America and happens to be a first-class amateur cook.

It is called La Fiesta Mexicana, a tiny place on Cross Street, the main drag that skims along the campus of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti.

La Fiesta Mexicana sits in what used to be a pinball parlor.

It is run by Michelle Roman and her husband, who hover over the dining room, graciously attending to their customers. They do all the service, from taking orders to bussing tables. The restaurant has no liquor license, so call about taking a beverage.

The food gets an unqualified “yes” for its brightness, vivid flavors and overall lightness. Delicacy is both spoken and understood at La Fiesta Mexicana.

I tend to use guacamole as the first measure of Mexican restaurants. If they can’t do a good guacamole, chances are the rest of the food isn’t going to be good either. The guacamole is superb, with a slight zesty flavor and that perky aromatic presence of cilantro.

The only thing I don’t like is their tortilla chips, which seem to be a flour and corn mix I find too thick, heavy and darkly cooked for the lightness of everything else on the menu.

The single best dish may be the tamale appetizers. If you want to see how delicate Mexican cooking can be, try the tamales.

There are three varieties, all made from scratch, in corn husks, of course: chicken in a spicy green sauce; refried bean, with a piece of jalapeno pepper; and Chihuahua cheese. They

are among the best tamales I’ve tasted in years.

Another delicate appetizer is the peneques, quesadillas rolled in egg batter, pan-fried, served on lettuce and topped with a warm garlic and onion sauce. The pan-fried quesadilla serves as a hot under-layer that emphasizes the sweetness of the onion and the aroma of the garlic. Super!

Even the chili rellenos are somewhat unusual. They are stuffed with ground beef, raisins, nuts and cheese, topped with a homemade tomato sauce and served with rice and tortillas.

Chicken in mole is a dicey dish. Some Mexican restaurants won’t even try it. And finding a good one among those that do is a search.

The chicken in mole here works. It is a careful, delicate balance of chicken simmered long and gently in the mole sauce, giving it a union between the two flavors, rather than a clash.

Union and harmony summarize the preparation and cooking here, and they’ll harmonize your wallet, too. Appetizers range from $1.50 to $5.50, and the vast majority of dinner plates cost $6 with the highest being $9.50. It’s hard to spend $15 a person here.

La Fiesta Mexicana is a restaurant worth a detour and a place to know about and set aside for a weekend meal as the approaching spring sends a lot of us out for weekend drives in the sunshine.

DST’s longer days find some of us sleepwalking

It’s Easter, and all over the country, churches are filled with hallelujahs. Meanwhile, many people’s heads are filled with molasses. They’re people for whom time has become an invention of the devil.

April is the cruelest month, the poet said, and he wasn’t kidding. More people commit suicide in this month than any other. So-called experts think this has to do with the plight of depressed persons in a happy season; more likely, some of us are naturally mowed down by an inability to shift to that hellish perversion of nature called daylight-saving time.

Until last Sunday, I had a routine that kept me more or less alert. Now, from the moment the alarm goes off till lunchtime, I feel like something used to sweep the streets. Most of my correspondents agree. The very night we all sprang forward into misery, I overheard a couple in a restaurant complain bitterly of the agony they’d have in adjusting.

In fact, I haven’t heard one good word for the time switch. Ask people

Beaufort Cranford

with school-age kids, and they’ll tell you the young’uns are hard to bed down an hour earlier, and getting them up the next morning is like dragging dead hippopotamuses from a tar pit.

Michigan, ever the bland conformist, keeps daylight-saving time. In the contiguous 48 states, only Arizona and most of Indiana refuse to subscribe. Who ever would have thought such intelligence and independence reside in Arizona and Indiana? But there you are.

Though toyed with across the country as early as 1918, DST wasn’t made law until 1966. (The law doesn’t require DST; it just says it has to be uniform.) Under the 1966 version,

DST began on the last Sunday of

April and ended the last Sunday in October. Not until the Reagan administration was the law amended to make April’s first Sunday the start date. What did Ronnie care about time? He napped whenever he felt like it.

When we were just little wiggly things in primeval tide pools, we followed the sun and the moon. We did certain things when the heavenly lights were on, and others when they were off. Much of the planet still does. We just got off the track somewhere; even standard time, into which most of my generation was irrevocably locked during our formative years, is but an invention. Shoot, it’s not even standard anymore; there are weeks more DST than EST.

Of course, DST does have some justification. Its champions crow that it saves energy because people don’t turn on electric stuff as soon after getting home from work. And supposedly it’s safer to drive in DST’s enforced daylight. Better yet, longer days apparently expose us to less crime. OK, but there’s a trade-off: For some people, me included, the advent of DST means weeks of fatigue and frustration. A solid chunk of the country is suffering.

The trouble is, many of us continue to run on standard time long after DST kicks in. And it doesn’t just mean we’re tired, though we are; it also means our productivity goes down.

What scares me is that I’m flying soon, and I’m sure that air-traffic controllers also suffer from post-DST sleep deprivation. What about those blips on your screen? Huh? What blips? What screen? BOOM!

OK, so maybe you aren’t traveling by air. Worry anyway. Evening commutes may be safer during DST, but you already know that many vehicles on the freeway have drowsy drivers even on standard-time mornings.

Look around at those cars and trucks and sport utility vehicles tomorrow, then imagine the living dead behind their wheels, blearily racing you to work. I’ll be one of them. Wave if you see me. Better yet, blow your horn and wake me up.

ABC’s “Nothing Sacred”? It actually won a Peabody Award last week for its “honest portrayal of the complexity of faith in the modem era,” but give me a break. Even if that was the best prime-time TV could do next to “Touched by an Angel,” ABC recently canceled the series.

Miracles and music

If the TV networks just gave a sliver of the attention and respect to all religions throughout the year that they cram into this one holy weekend, I betcha Jerry Springer wouldn’t be beating Oprah in the ratings.

Besides, why spend time with God when you can deify Princess Diana?

The four-hour movie “Diana: Her True Story” airs at 4 today on Lifetime, not to be confused with “Diana: The True Story,” a new two-hour documentary on “Biography” (8 tonight and midnight Monday, A&E), which kicks off a weeklong exploitation festival of “The Royals” on A&E.

And speaking of royalty, the Chicago Bulls saunter into Auburn Hills this week to tease our lamentable Pistons again (8 p.m. Wednesday, Fox Sports Detroit and TBS), while the still-reigning kings of hockey, Hockeytown’s hot Red Wings, battle for first place against the Dallas Stars in Big D (8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Channel 50).

■ The Ten Commandments, 7

tonight, ABC (Channel 7 in Detroit) — Every year, the Red Sea parts. Every year, Charlton Heston seems to look younger in this 1956 Cecil B. DeMille epic, making its 19th holiday weekend appearance on ABC since the 1970s. Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne DeCarlo, Yul Brynner, John Derek and Debra Paget top the cast, surrounded by 25,000 extras and some of the campiest dialogue in movie history.

■ The Day Lincoln Was Shot, 8

tonight (repeated at 10 tonight and midnight Monday), TNT — As Dr.

Joel Fleischmann, trapped in the Alaskan wilderness on “Northern Exposure,” Rob Morrow wanted to shoot himself. Now he’s out to kill President Lincoln. Morrow takes on the role of quixotic actor/assassin John Wilkes Booth in this new made-for-cable film. It is more psychological study than historical document as it traces the events leading up to the 16th president’s murder from the perspectives of both Booth and Lincoln. Lance Henriksen takes a break from scaring the bejeebers out of TV viewers on “Millennium” long enough to don beard and mole as Honest Abe.

■ Madonna Rising, 8 tonight, VH1 — Motherhood, a newfound spirituality, ranking status as the resurgent Princess Emeritus of pop — she really is Lady Madonna now. But Rochester’s own traces her career roots only as far back as the streets of New York for this new hour-long rockumentary, accompanied by her friend (and ersatz interviewer) Rupert Everett as she returns to her old Big Apple haunts. Among her stops is the brownstone stoop where the then-struggling singer and dancer was photographed just before she auditioned for a role in “Desperately Seeking Susan.” She did fairly well after that.

Motor City monarch Aretha Franklin performs live on “Divas Live: An Honors Concert for VH1 Save the Music.”

■ The Staircase, 9 tonight, CBS (Channel 62 in Detroit) — Talk about your stairway to heaven. Inspired by the legend of the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, N.M., this new based-on-Easter Sunday TV-movie stars Barbara Hershey (“Beaches”) as a * terminally ill mother superior who longs to see her Sisters of Loretto house of worship finished before she

“Roman Holiday,” noon today, Cinemax; “King of Kings,” 2 today, Turner Classic Movies, and 4:30 today and 2 a.m. Monday, TNT; “Jesus of Nazareth,” 7 tonight, The Family Channel; “Nobody’s Fool,” 9 tonight, NBC/Channel 4; “Fear of a Black Hat,” midnight Monday, Cinemax; “The Crusades,” 2:45 a.m. Monday, American Movie Classics; “The Sundowners,” 10 p.m. Monday, AMC; “Boyz N the Hood5 p.m.

dies, only to be crestfallen when it is accidentally built without a staircase. Enter a mysterious carpenter (William Petersen), who appears out of the New Mexico desert and offers to correct the oversight. He could really keep construction costs down if he could be found today: The chapel’s circular staircase, built in 1878, is considered an architectural miracle, erected without nails or visible means of support and made from a wood no scientist has been able to identify.

Tuesday, Channel 38; “Bambi,” 7 p.m. Tuesday, The Disney Channel; “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” 4 and 8 p.m. Wednesday, Comedy Central; “Cinema Paradiso,” midnight Thursday, Channel 9; Charles Chaplain film festival, beginning with “City Lights” at 8 a.m. Thursday, AMC; “Careful He Might Hear You ” 9 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday, Channel 56; “The Exorcist,” 11 p.m. Friday, TNT.

■ Divas Live: An Honors Concert for “VH1 Save the Music,” 9 p.m. Tuesday, VH1— In the first of two once-in-a-lifetime cable music specials this week, five of the recording industry’s pre-eminent female voices — Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Shdhia Twain, Gloria Estefan and Motor City monarch Aretha Franklin — are slated to perform live together at New York’s Beacon Theater for the first time in a benefit concert for VHl’s educational campaign Save the Music. Dion most assuredly will perform her Oscar-winning theme “My Heart Will Go On” from “Titanic,” just as the Queen of Soul will belt her current single, “A Rose Is Still a Rose.” The other special is “Bacharach: One Amazing Night” at 9 p.m. — repeated at 10:30 p.m. —Wednesday on TNT.

■ Love Boat: The Next Wave, 8

p.m. Monday and 9 p.m. Tuesday, UPN (Channel 50 in Detroit) — Prior to his hair growing back after he conquered cancer, Robert Urich would have been a deep-sea double for Gavin McLeod as Captain Steubing. But Urich, a Captain Courageous if
